Slate is a dense, tough, durable rock which is mined from quarries generally from the eastern United States.

Slate roofs were introduced to this country in the mid 19th century by immigrant Welsh craftsmen. Today there are two grades of slate in the northeast.

Vermont slate has a life expectancy of approximately 125 years because of its granite marble content, and comes in up to 7 shades.

Pennsylvania slate is a gray color with a life expectancy of approximately 65 years. All slate requires 16 oz. copper metal flashing in valley areas, yankee gutters, chimneys, and dormers sidewalls.
